Title: Crop Intensification in the Tropics

Start and End Time: Thursday, Oct 13, 2016, 7:15am - 8:30am

Location: Council Bluffs Room, 3rd Floor, Des Moines Marriott Hotel

Event Description: The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Soybean Value Chain Research (Soybean Innovation Lab, SIL) is USAID’s only comprehensive program dedicated to soybean technical knowledge and innovation. The SIL event at this year’s World Food Prize Borlaug Dialogue will focus on intensification of crop production in the tropics. This is a critical theme for SIL’s work as soybean is a commercial, non-native, non-staple crop.  While soybean is in great demand, is highly productive, and is a great economic engine for a region, there are non-trivial aspects to intensification in general, and soybean development specifically, such as environmental impacts, commercial input usage, and gender equity.  SIL tackles this tradeoff head on, understands its importance, and feels it needs greater understanding within the development community.  We thus invite you to participate in the Soybean Innovation Lab’s event, “Crop Intensification in the Tropics”, to engage with technical experts and thought leaders focused on the role of agricultural intensification and its impact in tropical settings.

Speakers:

  • Dr. Robert Easter, President Emeritus, University of Illinois
Dr. Rob Bertram, Chief Scientist, Bureau for Food Security, USAID
Dr. Michael Robinson, Chief Science Advisor, Syngenta Foundation for Sustainable Agriculture
